Earl McCune, Eridan

Earl is a Fellow of the IEEE, and is a serial entrepreneur from Silicon Valley.  He has worked with radio circuits and systems for more than 50 years, and has 93 issued US patents.  He has sole authored two books for Cambridge University Press, and presently is both a Full Professor at TU Delft and is the CTO of Eridan Communications in California.  He also serves as the Chair of the IEEE Standards Working Group on Energy Efficient Communication Hardware. 

There is not enough electricity to run 5G – finding the road to 6G

Abstract – LTE transmitters draw a lot of power, and the RAN changes adopted for 5G-NR make this power draw issue worse.  There is a new very high efficiency solution for the 5G-NR signal operating in the sub-6 GHz frequency bands, but this solution does not translate to millimeter-wave (mmW) frequency bands.  Matching modulation design to the innate capabilities of existing mmW transmitters can immediately increase realized energy efficiency by a factor of 15 or more.  These analyses point the way to success on the road to 6G.
